Strengthening Voices on Women’s Access to Comprehensive Abortion Care: Role of Media

Ipas Development Foundation (IDF) organized a dialogue with representatives of the media in Jaipur, Rajasthan, on January 24, 2017 . Journalists from various publications including Times of India, Hindustan Times, Rajasthan Patrika, Dainik Bhaskar, and Veer Arjun among others, were present at the event, Strengthening Voices on Women. Access to Comprehensive Abortion Care: Role of Media. Participants deliberated on issues around women. Access to comprehensive abortion care (CAC); gender biased sex selection; and the critical role of the media in championing the health and rights of women and girls, with a special focus on Rajasthan.
Indian women face significant challenges in accessing safe abortion services despite a liberal law. The Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, 1971 which makes abortion legal in India under a broad range of conditions. Ten women in India die each day due to unsafe abortion-related causes, bearing down on the importance of increasing awareness about the legality and availability of abortion services in the public sector.
