Comprehensive Abortion Care for Women: A Roadmap for Increasing Access

Background:

Comprehensive Abortion Care (CAC) is an integral component of maternal health interventions under the National Health Mission (NHM). The Government of India (GoI) is committed to strengthening woman-centered CAC services especially in the public sector and has taken various initiatives in this regard. Ipas Development Foundation has been working in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), GoI to strengthen the national program and with state governments in 13 states for effective implementation of the safe abortion component.

This national consultation, chaired by Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Government of India will bring together senior officials from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare; Mission Directors (NHM) and program officers from state governments; NGO and donor partners; researchers; and other relevant stakeholders to develop a roadmap to increase access to comprehensive abortion care services. This will build on the deliberations made during an earlier national consultation in 2014.

The objectives of the consultation are:

1. Comprehensive review of the CAC interventions across the country
2. Orientation of all concerned stakeholders on the new initiatives for CAC
3. Agreement on strategies for strengthening the quality of and access to woman-centered CAC services in the public sector

Expected Outcomes:

1. A roadmap for increasing to access to CAC services based on the context and current interventions at the national and state levels

A.) Renewed focus on appropriate technologies for CAC service delivery especially Medical Methods of Abortion

B.) Prioritization of strategies for strengthening CAC services

C.) Identification of innovative strategies for strengthening CAC services
Participants:

The consultation would be attended by 150 – 175 participants including MD (NHM); CAC nodal officers and PC&PNDT nodal officers from all States and Union Territories; senior officials from MoHFW; donor representatives, NGO representatives, researchers, media, and other stakeholders.
