Post Abortion Family Planning Technical Update

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has released a technical update on postabortion family planning (PAFP) to streamline the efforts in providing family planning services at the field level. The update details the various family planning methods available to women post abortion, and acts as a technical tool for service providers to enable them to offer quality PAFP services.

The release of this update was announced at the National Family Planning Summit – 2016, held on 5th and 6th April in New Delhi. The theme of the year’s event was ‘New Choices, New Horizons’. IDF was invited to present on our experiences providing PAFP at the event, during which we also showcased our comprehensive contraceptive care (CCC) project.

The MoHFW, on August 24, 2016, further issued a ready reckoner for states to follow and implement PAFP successfully. This reckoner, Operational Guidelines for Post Abortion Family Planning, also make certain recommendations for CAC training including the dissemination of the PAFP technical update; use of the medical methods of abortion (MMA) e-module and MMA handbook; and practice of intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) insertion on at least two cases (by CAC trainees who have prior IUCD training.)
